Thursday Dance After School

Last Thursday we began a Dunham Technique class for students after school. I'm encouraging all Aveson students interested in taking dance to attend.

This is just another way for me to get more time with my K-5ers!! (6-9ers are encouraged to attend as well)

The Dunham technique incorporates various Afro-Carribbean traditional dances with American modern dance and ballet.

The class was great and the students had a wonderful time. We cant wait to see you next Thursday, 4:15-5:30 in the school Auditorium!!!!!

Aveson Fitness, K-9:
Fitness Education in a Personalized Learning Environment

VISION:
Fitness at Aveson will be thematic and holistic. It will be standards-based and consistent with individualized project-based learning. With a school-wide emphasis on personalized fitness plans...it's like having a personal trainer for every child.

PROGRAM:
Each member of the Aveson community (students, faculty and staff ) will have a Personalized Fitness Plan or PFP. PFP's will be developed by the individual community member in conjunction with the Fitness Advisor, assessment data and parental input where applicable. PFP's will be designed to meet individual goals and needs.

Community members will meet individually, or semi-individually with the Fitness Advisor once a month on a rotating schedule. Fitness meetings may include personalized fitness sessions, developing or enhancing PFP's, reflection on meeting established PFP goals, creating meal plans and take home activities and small group instruction.

In addition to personalized fitness, students in grades K-5 will also engage in 200 minutes of physical activity every 10 days or 20 minutes per day on average with their academic advisor.

Students in grades 6-9 will engage in 400 minutes of physical activity every 10 days or 40 minutes per day on average, either individually or with the fitness advisor. Students will receive large group instruction (1:32 ratio) a minimum of two times a week.

Progress and achievements will be demonstrated every 9 to 10 weeks as an integral part of the fitness program as the school partakes in Aveson School-Wide Fitness Week.

Dance at Aveson

ASL

K-5 students will have generalized instruction in dance. Students will experience traditional and recreational dance from a multicultural perspective on Fridays. Students will see me once every other week, and learn different dances from diverse cultures.

Their dance education will cover both performing arts standards as well as physical education standards. Students will also have the opportunity to perform towards the end of the year if so desired.

AGLA

6-9 students will have more specific instruction in dance. They will learn a codefied modern dance technique called Dunham Technique. The Dunham technique incorporates various Afro-Carribbean traditional dances with American modern dance and ballet.

Dunham technique is traditionally taught with the accompaniment of Afro-Carribbean drums.

Students in grades 6-9 will also be instructed in fundamental choreographic principles and improvisation as well as the fall and recovery and release techniques of the post-modern era.

This will be a standards-based course that will give the students an opportunity to learn technique, dance history, choreography and methods of choreographing. All students will be required to dance infront of an audience, (even if it is only in front of their peers).
