Whats new in the world of Aveson Fitness?

K-9

All cadres have begun their personal fitness plans. I started pulling the K-5er's out in small grade level groups (5-7) to begin assessing them and teaching them appropriate fitness exercises.

All students will be assessed in terms of body composition and given their BMI number. 4-9th graders will be/have been assessed in the remainder of the five components of physical fitness as well. This refers to muscle strength and endurance, flexibility, and aerobic capacity. 95% of 6-9th graders already have a physical fitness plan specific to their individual needs, based on assessment and interest.

K-3rd graders have been/will be given specific exercises that they should work on at home.
Modified Pilates 100's for children 5-10
Hamstring stretches on the back

4-9th graders have been/will be given any of the following depending on individual needs:
1-mile Power Walk daily
1-mile jog 1,2, or 3 days per week
Alternate power Walk and jog 5 days a week
Hamstring Stretch daily (on back). Three 16 count reps, alternating right and left for 10 min
Bridge exercises for back

K-2 Fitness

Last week, I saw all K-2nd graders in their advisories for fitness. They learned a dance called Pata Pata. 1st and 2nd graders learned new vocabulary such as "traditional - something passed down from generation to generation", and "recreational - activity that people do just for fun, such as recess". After learning these words, my extraordinary 2nd graders figured out that Pata Pata was a fun dance that has been passed down from generation to generation.

Pata Pata is a traditional, recreational dance created to celebrate African American culture. The steps are:

1. Touch with the right foot, together,
2. Touch with the left foot, together,
3. Out with the heels,
4. Out with the toes,
5. In with the toes,
6. In with the heels,
7. Up with the right knee,
8. Down with the right knee,
9. Up with the right knee,
10. Down with the right knee,
11. Kick with the left,
12. Step left, right, left,
13. Begin again from #1!

K's and 1st graders learned steps 1, and 2. 2nd graders learned all the way through step 6.

Ask your children about Pata Pata, and if they can show you what they learned. If they have trouble, use the words listed above. I really enjoyed teaching the little ones this fun, easy dance, and encourage us all to work on it at home.

K-5 Fitness

Individual Pull out began last week for the K-5ers. I met with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in Mr. Melkonian and Ms. Hanks' Block 2 Projects. We actually started in the third week of the "Fitness Rotation Schedule".

As you may or may not know, 3-5 have switched cohort groups. This may present some confusion with which students have already been seen. Not to fear...We will make sure every student is seen.

When students are pulled to see me, they will be doing their initial fitness assessments. This involves being assessed on the five components of physical fitness. These five components are Body Compostion, Aerobic Capacity, Upper body Strength, Abdominal Strength, and Flexibility. Once I have all the data, I can begin developing their personal fitneess plans.

Also, we have put a schedule into place that will give the K-5 students an opportunity to have large group physical activity with me every other week. One Friday they will learn traditional and recreational dance, and the other Friday they will do sports and large group games - That's twice a month! Don't forget, the students also have physical acivity daily with either their math or project teacher. September's warm up activity was Yoga - The Sun Salutation. Ask your child to show you the Yoga positions he/she has learned.
